    Umwelt

The unfinished house opposite ours has come under the hammer and stands demolished. Suddenly the blue sky is visible across the road, but the huge tree that guarded the house and attracted birdsong has been chopped off at night.

Today, I hear some sounds at the gate and walk across to investigate. I find five small pups amid the debris, all colored differently. Their mother comes running and growls at me. The dappled one looks up and tries to stand, it has a foreleg missing.

Note: the pups have grown since then. Dappled is the one on the left. 💕

    Rewilding

During the pandemic, we are confined to our homes for many days due to lockdown restrictions. The streets are deserted, with little traffic. I go to the terrace to watch squirrels that nest at the top of the evergreen tree in the garden and to converse with the koel, bulbuls and pigeons that visit. Watching the sunrise and sunset colouring the sky and the leisurely movement of clouds to a soundtrack of birdsong becomes a joyful ritual.

One day around sunset, a fawn wanders onto the street from the neighbouring forest. Maybe the silence of the usually noisy city leads him to venture here. I am reminded of the Disney world of Bambi and rush down the staircase to view the scene more closely and also to see that he is protected from stray dogs. By the time I get to the street, the fawn has disappeared. Where could he have vanished? Was it a mirage caused by the deepening dusk?

Disappointed, I come back inside and what do I see? The lovely Bambi and my dog, Rumi, sitting in the garden, gently licking each other like old friends.

    Letting Go

Dogs are better than human beings because they know but do not tell.”
    ~ Emily Dickinson

On my evening walk to the Fragrance Garden, as I wait to cross the road, I see a black stray on the pavement also waiting. Continuous traffic, the blare of horns of cars, scooters, and auto-rickshaws is intimidating. During a break in the mayhem, I start to cross the road, the dog moves alongside me, and before we know it, we have reached the other side.

I enter the garden, the dog beside me. He trails, sniffing and wagging his tail as I take a round of the garden. I sit on the red bench under the banyan tree, he settles down at my feet. After ten minutes of deep breathing, I get up and start running toward the jogging path. He looks up and then flops down. The jogging strategy works. I have left the dog safe in the garden and burnt more calories than usual.

    a sunflower droops
    bids adieu
